.hack / NetHack

Finally, I am out of my gaming funk, thanks to many games of NetHack. So I spun the “gaming tastes” dial in my head, and it came up “RPGs”. I picked up .hack//INFECTION, since I knew it was going to be good, but not so long that it would lose my interest.

I thought my gaming efforts were going to by stymied when K came to visit on Saturday and after church on Sunday… Instead, she really got into the story! So, the upside is that I get to play my games, even when K is visiting! The downside is… well, it would be really impolite of me to progress the game when she’s not around to see it. Luckily I have some other games I want to (re)play — ICO comes to mind [0] – but in general, the rule is looking like: NetHack on the weekdays, .hack on the weekends. ;) (I’m not complaining! Frankly, it’s heartening that K won’t want me to quit playing games when we get married!) [0] ICO is the new Megaman 2. I used to play through MM2 in about three hours every six months or so. I’m getting the same cravings for ICO… But now that I mention it, for MM2, as well… :D

My Inferiority Complex Is Far Above Average

Elitism – EXTREME EDITION

I couldn’t help it… I know that “pedestrian” just means “average” or “as expected” in scientific terms, but it often has a negative connotation in cultural terms. So, I couldn’t help but laugh when I read that the Milky Way has a feature that distinguishes it from pedestrian spiral galaxies. (Oh, and don’t I know it? I’m so glad we moved here! That 27KLY bar brings up the property value, and the neighbours are SO quiet…)

Birthday Partay

Actually, no, but it went all right anyway. Let’s see…

Toys!

  • Shiatsu Massager! Very nice for my back, now that I’m getting old. ;)
  • Color Cube! I don’t know what to make of “color therapy”, but looking at something so cool is pretty relaxing. I described it to my brother as “a screensaver for real life.”
  • Carcassonne! No, not the deed to the city, but the game. K and I played a game… it took about 90 minutes instead of the 45 suggested by the box, but it was the first go, so perhaps we’ll speed up later. (We also were very careful to play by our own “be nice” house rules, which took a lot longer… believe me, it’s harder to play “fair” than to run roughshod over an opponent when the game’s complexity picks up. We didn’t want the game to get contentious, though. Be warned: we do not intend to play nice with others. ;) (Also, K won. Her “Rural Conquest” strategy pulled her through in the end.)

Gifts!

  • I got some very nice cards in the mail and in person, and some of them had money in them! (I hope that I never get too old for my relatives to send me birthday money. Even though it’s not as big a deal now, financially speaking, it adds to the excitement and helps me to connect with the traditions of my family that have stood at least since I was a child. And, of course, the gift is still appreciated as a gift!)
  • I also had some relatives pick up some fees related to my recent car acquisition. I appreciate that, too. Double bonus: a gift, plus I don’t have to go to the BMV!

Festivities!

  • Well… actually, we were a bit light on these. It was just K and me, mostly, except for Sunday lunch…
  • Ate in on Saturday night, but I got a raincheck for my birthday dinner.
  • Watched the last 2/3 of Trigun and played Carcassonne.
  • Read a book from Canthros.
  • K played lots of Animal Crossing.
  • Caaaaaaaaaaaake! <*gasp*>

So, I guess I haven’t really given up on birthdays just yet, but I really liked just having a good, low-key time.

Oops.

Forgot. Under Festivities: Got a new wlan card working in this laptop’s Debian install. Not very festive, I guess, but it was fun.
